The World's Hardest and Easiest Cities to Navigate for Tourists

We analysed 49 major cities to reveal where tourists struggle most to navigate—and how Nomad eSIM makes it easier

World's Hardest Cities to Navigate

In an era where tourists rely heavily on Google Maps, ride-hailing apps, and live transit updates, mobile connectivity has become just as important as public transport itself. That’s especially true for travellers using services like Nomad eSIMto stay connected the moment they land.

So which cities around the world are the toughest to find your way through, and which are the easiest? To find out, we analysed 49 of the world's most visited cities across four key factors: how often visitors search for directions and transit information (adjusted for annual tourist numbers), how walkable each city is on foot, how expensive a taxi will cost if things go wrong, and how fast mobile internet speeds are when you need to pull up a map. Each factor is worth up to 50 points, giving a total score out of 200. The lower the score, the harder the city is to navigate.

Methodology

To identify the hardest and easiest cities to navigate in the world, we analysed 49 major tourist destinations across four key metrics: search volumes for directions and public transport keywords adjusted for annual visitor numbers (sourced from global keyword data), walkability scores (sourced from Walk Score and Nearby Index), average taxi prices for a 3km journey (sourced from Numbeo), and median mobile download speeds (sourced from Speedtest Global Index). Each city was assigned a score for each factor based on its performance relative to other cities in the study, with lower combined scores indicating greater navigational difficulty. Data is correct as of April 13th, 2026.
