Travel eSIM Security FAQs

Are travel eSIMs secure to install and use?

Yes. An eSIM is simply a digital version of a physical SIM card. Installing an eSIM does not give the provider access to your device, contacts, photos, messages, or other personal data.

Travel eSIMs use the same underlying mobile network technology as traditional SIM cards. For example, some concerns focus on the possibility of an eSIM profile being downloaded with malicious network settings. Such a risk would not originate from eSIM technology itself. In practice, it would require a compromise of the telecom operator or network infrastructure providing the service, which would impact all users of that network, regardless of whether they use a travel eSIM, a local eSIM, or a traditional physical SIM.

Can my data be monitored or routed through other countries?

All mobile data travels through telecommunications networks operated by carriers and their partners. Depending on the provider, traffic may be routed through different countries before reaching the internet.

This is not unique to travel eSIMs. Traditional roaming services and many international mobile networks operate in the same way. In both cases, governments generally have legal authority to access data that passes through telecommunications operators within their jurisdiction, subject to local laws and regulations.

Reputable travel eSIM providers carefully select network partners and routing arrangements to deliver reliable connectivity while minimizing issues related to censorship, network restrictions, or performance.

Do travel eSIM apps collect sensitive information from my phone?

An eSIM itself cannot access information stored on your device. Any permissions requested during setup come from the mobile app being used, not from the eSIM technology.

As with any app, users should review requested permissions and download applications only from trusted sources. The Nomad app does not require access to personal content such as contacts, photos, or messages. Any permissions requested by the app are limited to what is necessary to install and manage your eSIM, support your account, and provide customer support.

Will using a travel eSIM affect my online accounts?

In some cases, websites and online services may detect that your internet traffic is coming from a different country than your physical location. This can happen with travel eSIMs, traditional international roaming, hotel Wi-Fi networks, VPNs, and other international internet connections.

As a result, some websites may display a localized version of their site or request additional identity verification for sensitive activities such as financial transactions or online purchases. These security checks are standard anti-fraud measures and are not specific to eSIM technology.
